THE PROJECT

KPN is the Netherland’s largest mobile network operator, with some 56% market share and 27 million mobile phone customers across Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands. Managing such a complex network involves handling vast amounts of network status data, both from KPN’s own network and from its partners around the world. All this information is monitored centrally at KPN’s network operating centre (NOC) in Hilversum in central Holland. Needing to keep up with developments and cope with its own expanding customer base, the company decided in 2007 to replace the incumbent, nine-year-old display wall with a new, state-of-the-art Mitsubishi Electric solution.

THE SOLUTION

The system, supplied by integrator Heuvelman, consists of a total of 60 of Mitsubishi Electric’s VS-67XLW50U display cubes split into three identical walls of 32 M2. Each 5x4 cube wall delivers a resolution of 5120 x 3072. The whole system – one of the largest control room system in Europe - is controlled by Mitsubishi’s new VC-X3000 display wall controller, which processes all the incoming network data, plus off-air video sources and external data such as weather reports. The controller also interfaces with the operator terminals in the room to create a completely interactive working environment.

All three walls are housed in the same room, and are used by KPN to monitor its world-wide mobile phone network data. The massive displays show national network data and the status of connections from Holland to the rest of the world. From this data, KPN can evaluate the quality of the network connections anywhere on the planet. Operators are able to capture any piece of information from the large display and bring it down to their own terminal for closer analysis.

15 PCs are connected to the display wall controllers creating a network interface which allows remote access over the LAN or WAN. The VC-X3000 is incredibly versatile,  enabling KPN to manage the large number of inputs with ease. Heuvelman worked closely with KPN to create a series of preset wall configurations that can be accessed with a simple mouse click. They also developed a user-friendly, drag-and-drop windows environment to allow KPN’s own operators to devise their own custom layouts as required. The flexibility of the VC-X3000 solution, along with legendary Mitsubishi quality, provides KPN with a robust network management solution for the next decade and beyond.

The perfect complement to Mitsubishi Electric’s  display wall  systems

The VC-X3000 display wall processor gathers all of your data and video and presents it on the display wall in whatever configuration you need.  Creating sophisticated layouts is quick and easy via an intuitive, windows-based environment. The remote client D-Wall software allows multiple operators to create and select layouts and configure display windows, and multi mouse cursors support allows several users to interact with the applications displayed on the wall. Along with unbeatable flexibility and ease of use, the VC-X3000 is built for reliability, with redundant power supplies, fans and RAID disks.

Together with effortlessly handling video and data inputs the VC-X3000 also manages the display wall itself - monitoring and controlling brightness, lamp changers, power on / off and key operating parameters. For even more sophisticated applications, the VC-X3000 can be seamlessly integrated with the MK-3000 graphics insertion processor to create a totally integrated display sub-system with unparalleled versatility.
